European logistics fleet cuts low-speed incidents with 360° surround view

The operation

An urban distribution operator running rigid trucks on dense city routes: multi-drop deliveries, tight loading yards, constant kerbside manoeuvring in pedestrian-heavy streets. Like most urban fleets, the incident log was dominated not by highway collisions but by low-speed events — reversing into street furniture, nearside scrapes while turning, and near-misses with cyclists moving up the inside.

These incidents rarely injure, but they are relentless: repair costs, vehicles off the road, insurance claims that are hard to defend without evidence, and drivers who arrive stressed before the shift has begun.

What was fitted

The fleet standardised one kit across its rigid trucks:

  • 360° surround view (AVM) — four IP69K fisheye cameras stitched into a bird’s-eye image, shown automatically at low speed and when indicating
  • Radar blind-spot detection on the nearside, escalating from a visual cue to an audible alarm when a person or cyclist is in the danger zone during a turn
  • Multi-channel MDVR recording all cameras with GPS, giving claims teams usable evidence within minutes of an incident report

Installation and calibration were performed depot-by-depot; automatic calibration kept fitting time per vehicle inside a single workshop slot.

What changed

  • Fewer low-speed incidents. The operator recorded a marked reduction in reversing and turning damage in the first year, concentrated exactly where the system gives drivers new information: nearside and rear quarters.
  • Faster, cheaper claims. With synchronised video and position data, disputed third-party claims that previously settled by default could be defended or closed early.
  • Driver acceptance. After initial scepticism, drivers reported using the bird’s-eye view as their primary reference in yards and loading bays — the system saved time, not just paint.

Lessons for similar fleets

  1. Fit the whole risk picture, not one gadget: the surround view helps the driver, the radar catches what the driver misses, the recorder protects the business afterwards.
  2. Calibration quality decides driver trust — budget workshop time for it.
  3. Track incident categories before rollout, so the effect is measurable.
